Regenerative farming allows us to directly participate in critical domains we care about — health, community, education, and environmental stewardship.

To work in alignment with our values, New Hannah Farm must quickly establish a foundation of profitability. The business of farming is notorious for its thin profit margins, and the implementation of our ideals can come with a hefty price tag (especially on an island).

However, with your support, we can leverage grants, cost-share programs, and other opportunities to advance these goals:

  • Improve soil health (with regenerative growing strategies)

  • Increase carbon sequestration / reduce carbon emissions

  • Optimize for intensive food production

  • Increase our growing season (to 10-12 months)

  • Increase profit and efficiency / reduce costs and waste

  • Future-poof the farm (with closed-loop systems and critical redundancy infrastructure)

  • Ensure access to labor by supporting farm employees

  • Establish replicable models for current and future farmers

FUNDING SECURED --- INSTALLATION IN PROGRESS ---

Irrigation Expansion & Upgrade

STATUS:

  • Fundraising in progress

  • Installation in progress

PARTNERS / CONTRIBUTORS:

  • Natural Resource Conservation Service (USDA)

Project Summary

We have outgrown our original irrigation system. Now, with the help of our local Conservation District, we have an opportunity to install a new, ultra-efficient, cutting-edge system to conserve our water AND optimize crop health.

Movable High Tunnels

STATUS:

  • Assembly paused until completion of irrigation project

  • FUNDING SECURED!!!

PARTNERS / CONTRIBUTORS:

  • San Juan Islands Conservation District

Project Summary

Season extension is a key factor for our farm’s financial viability. With movable high tunnels, we can finally become a four-season operation! However, the benefits of these structures extend far beyond just winter production.

NHF Volunteer Program

STATUS:

  • Pilot Project

  • Researching Viability

PARTNERS / CONTRIBUTORS:

  • The Local Community

Project Summary

An official volunteer program with significant potential to revolutionize the way we farm. The goal is to create a framework that other island farms could use to strengthen the viability of our local food system.

No-Till Production

STATUS:

  • In Progress / Ongoing

PARTNERS / CONTRIBUTORS:

  • San Juan Islands Agricultural Guild

Project Summary

Our food system hinges on the health of our soil. “No-till” growing strategies offer a way to mitigate the challenges of climate change, conserve our resources, and establish closed-loop systems on the farm. This will ultimately reduce our workload and make us a more resilient and productive farm.

Other Projects We’re Thinking About

  • Perennial crops (herbs, rhubarb, asparagus, berries, etc.)

  • Agrovoltaics (solar power on the farm)

  • On-farm biochar production

  • Hedgerows (for wind buffers and habitat for beneficial fauna)
