Volunteer Program (Pilot Project)

So many of you have expressed interest in volunteering at NHF that we are now exploring the viability of an official volunteer program. We hope to establish a replicable model that will continuously strengthen our local food system by facilitating community participation in agriculture.

How Does It Work?

This program is designed to offer maximum flexibility and facilitate a fun and convivial experience for volunteers of all ages and skill-levels. Everyone is welcome!

1. Register to Volunteer

Upcoming volunteer opportunities will be sent to you via email. These emails will provide all of the relevant details — available tasks, work windows, special notes, etc. Send us an RSVP by the deadline so we can prepare enough snacks, drinks, etc.

2. Show Up and Jump In

After you arrive at the farm and sign in at the “volunteer station,” you can choose from available tasks and get started.

3. Leave Whenever You Want

Work for as long (or as briefly) as you’d like. We’re SO grateful for any time you’re willing to give us! When you’re ready to stop, simply sign out, put away your tools or gear, and collect your personal belongings.

How This Program Benefits…

  • This program aims to offer a rewarding and salubrious experience. We hope that volunteering at NHF can be something you’d feel like doing on a fairly regular basis, like taking a walk on the beach or having coffee with friends.

Consider joining us in the garden if you’re ready to…
Relax and decompress after a long day at the office
    * Connect with others and swap stories
    * Learn new skills
    * Retreat and listen to a podcast or audiobook
    * Get your heart pumping and stay limber

  • Farming on the island is extremely challenging. If you’ve been a longtime shopper of local food, you’ve probably noticed that many of our most treasured farms have scaled down or vanished.

Farms cannot keep raising their prices to achieve financial viability. Everyone deserves access to fresh, healthy food. Of course, our farmers’ passion and dedication to their mission cannot subsidize a broken food system.

To be profitable AND keep our prices low, we must reduce our cost of production. Labor is (by far) the biggest cost. That’s where YOU come in!

By becoming a volunteer, you not only help your farmers afford to keep farming, you are also supporting food equity in your community.
